Buenos Aires, 16 marzo (NA) \u2013 El arquero Sergio \u201cChiquito\u201d Romero, de extensa trayectoria en la Selecci\u00f3n argentina, decidi\u00f3 retirarse del f\u00fatbol profesional a los 39 a\u00f1os.<\/p>\n

Seg\u00fan supo la Agencia Noticias Argentinas, tiene planeado dedicarse a la direcci\u00f3n t\u00e9cnica y su entrenador de arqueros ser\u00eda Alejandro Santill\u00e1n, con quien trabaj\u00f3 en Venezia y Boca.<\/p>\n

Romero debut\u00f3 a nivel profesional en Racing en el 2007, unos d\u00edas antes de cumplir los 20 a\u00f1os. Durante su paso por la \u201cAcademia\u201d ataj\u00f3 solo en cuatro partidos y fue convocado para el Mundial Sub 20, donde fue clave en la conquista del t\u00edtulo gracias a sus impresionantes atajadas.<\/p>\n

Esto le permiti\u00f3 dar el salto al \u201cViejo Continente\u201d, ya que fue comprado por el AZ Alkmaar de Pa\u00edses Bajos, donde se desempe\u00f1\u00f3 durante cuatro temporadas. All\u00ed conquist\u00f3 la Eredivisie 2008\/09 y la Supercopa de los Pa\u00edses Bajos 2009.<\/p>\n

Luego jug\u00f3 en la Sampdoria de Italia y en el M\u00f3naco de Francia, aunque el equipo en el que m\u00e1s a\u00f1os estuvo fue el Manchester United de Inglaterra, entre 2015 y 2021. Pese a nunca haberse ganado la titularidad con los \u201cRed Devils\u201d, pudo ganar la FA Cup y la Community Shield 2016, adem\u00e1s de la Copa de la Liga y la Europa League en 2017.<\/p>\n

Despu\u00e9s de una temporada en el Venezia de Italia, Romero volvi\u00f3 a la Argentina en el 2023 para jugar en Boca, donde ser\u00eda fundamental al lucirse en tres tandas de penales consecutivas para alcanzar la final de la Copa Libertadores, aunque terminar\u00edan qued\u00e1ndose con las manos vac\u00edas ya que cayeron 2-1 frente a Fluminense.<\/p>\n

Su \u00faltimo equipo fue Argentinos Juniors, donde solo ataj\u00f3 en cuatro ocasiones y tuvo muy flojas actuaciones.<\/p>\n

En lo que respecta a la Selecci\u00f3n argentina, Romero tuvo una extensa trayectoria que le permiti\u00f3 convertirse en el arquero con m\u00e1s presencias con la \u201cAlbiecleste\u201d, con 96 partidos.<\/p>\n

\u201cChiquito\u201d ataj\u00f3 durante dos Mundiales. El primero de ellos fue el de Sud\u00e1frica 2010, donde la Selecci\u00f3n cay\u00f3 en cuartos de final frente a Alemania, mientras que en 2014 fue muy importante para alcanzar la final. Incluso se luci\u00f3n en las semifinales frente a Pa\u00edses Bajos, en una inolvidable noche en la que ataj\u00f3 dos penales en la definici\u00f3n desde los 12 pasos.<\/p>\n

En las selecciones juveniles gan\u00f3 el ya mencionado Mundial Sub 20 de 2007 y la medalla de oro en los Juegos Ol\u00edmpicos de Beijing 2008. <\/p>\n
